MFG Month Classroom Competition
"Package Drop" Challenge
Project Overview
MFG Month provides Sonoma County classes the opportunity to participate in an engineering design challenge throughout the month of October. The competition will challenge students to practice their engineering skills and environmental sustainability; important skills and practices utilized in the manufacturing industry. Created in collaboration with several Keysight Engineers, this “package drop” challenge is designed to replicate real-world industry applications. The goal is to design and test packaging and materials that can keep the “product” safe from extreme shipping hazards while staying as cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable as possible. All materials will be provided by Keysight Technologies.
Participating classes are competing to win a grant from the CTE Foundation to be used for new or upgraded class equipment or materials.
- 1st Place: $750
- 2nd Place: $250

Students will be judged on
- their design and testing process, demonstrated through a presentation to a panel of MFG Month judges,
- the sustainability and costs of the packaging materials used, AND
- the ability to keep the “product” safe when dropped from extreme heights, testing by Keysight Engineers.
"Recycling the Materials"
"The Mechanics"
The project is estimated to take about 3-6 hours of class time and designed to be a fun and creative challenge that teaches students key engineering skills, problem solving, communication, teamwork, cost analysis, and the importance of using sustainable materials. Below, you will find a sign-up form which we invite you to fill out. Please join us in introducing the next generation to the incredible career paths in manufacturing!
